Featured OC: The Rt. Hon. Jonathan Hill CBE (NG 1973), Lord Hill of Oareford, European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union
Hill worked in the Conservative Research Department (1985–86), before serving as Special Adviser to Kenneth Clarke at the Department of Employment, Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Health until 1989. After working for Lowe Bell Communications (1989–91), he worked at the Number 10 Policy Unit (1991-92) and served as Political Secretary to Prime Minister John Major and Head of the Prime Minister's Political Office (1992–94) during the negotiations of the Maastricht Treaty. He was appointed CBE in the 1995 New Year's Honours List. Subsequently, Hill worked at Bell Pottinger Group 1994-98 as a Senior Consultant, before becoming a founding director of Quiller Consultants in the latter year.

On 27 May 2010, he was created a Life Peer as Baron Hill of Oareford in the County of Somerset, and was introduced to the House of Lords on the same day, taking office as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools at the Department for Education. After the resignation of Lord Strathclyde as Leader of the House of Lords, in January 2013, Lord Hill was appointed as his successor and was sworn of the Privy Council.

In July 2014, Prime Minister David Cameron chose Lord Hill as his nominee for UK European Commissioner. Both the Institute of Directors and the President of the CBI welcomed his nomination, citing his pragmatism and familiarity with Whitehall’s political machinery as excellent assets for dealing with the EU, and the robust economic portfolio Britain is hoping to gain. His appointment to a key financial position in the EU is widely seen as an acknowledgement from Jean-Claude Juncker that Britain, despite being a non-Euro member state, is still held to be very important financially to the EU; 40% of Europe's financial services come from the City of London.
