Duncan Piper Enters the Race
On Wednesday 13th April, Former Head of School, Duncan Piper (SG 2006), will be running the London Marathon for the Royal National Children's Foundation. The Foundation takes vulnerable children (aged 7-18), who have suffered serious trauma, tragedy or neglect in their homes, and places them in UK boarding schools for up to eleven years.
Please sponsor Duncan on his Virgin Giving page here - any help you can give is deeply appreciated.
Duncan has been running since he was 10 years old, was captain of the School Cross Country team and has previously completed two half marathons, Run to the Beat (2013) and the Norwich Half Marathon (2007). This will be the runner’s first full Marathon, however, and Duncan is eager to take on the challenge:
I'm really looking forward to the marathon - the distance is a little daunting, but I've become pretty accustomed to the feeling of nausea over the years! I'm looking forward to pushing myself, and I know the feeling at the finish line will be worth it - it'll be a really empowering experience. I'm also proud to be raising money for such an incredible cause that truly transforms the lives of those it supports. Those of us lucky enough to have gone to Highgate will realise how powerful a fantastic education can be.

Dr Andrew Szydlo at the Royal Institution
Situated in the heart of London’s West End, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, housing one of the world’s foremost and most prestigious science lecture theatres, has recently been the subject of a £22M refurbishment program. The Faraday Lecture Theatre (named after the great Michael Faraday who inaugurated public science lectures during the 19th century) is the jewel in the crown of this magnificent building.
On 23rd April 2014, in a unique 8th appearance, AZS will be giving his celebrated talk: “As if by Magic…” at the RI at 6pm. This is a family event whose aim will be to entertain, enlighten and educate. It promises to be a great occasion, and all are warmly invited to attend.
